Birthdefriend is a name I coined to describe a practice many of my friends have recently adopted. We tend to accumulate quite a few Facebook friends. Sure, most of them are people we know well enough, but sometimes you meet someone briefly and one person feels compelled to "friend" the other on Facebook.
But then a few years go by and you can't even put a face to the name. It's time to defriend. And what better way to determine who to eliminate from your friends than perusing the Facebook birthday reminder at the top right of the page. It selects a handful of names for you each day and gives you the opportunity to decide whether or not you'd like to remain friends.
The theory here is that if you're not good enough friends to wish the person birthday wishes on their big day, maybe you shouldn't be Facebook friends with them. What do you think about birthdefriending?
*Defriend and unfriend are synonymous. Merriam Webster officially added the word unfriend to the dictionary a few years ago, but as a person who has been using Facebook since 2005 and has always referred to the practice as defriending, I am sticking with it. The debate is on!
